Success of League of Legends

Currently, it is undeniable that League of Legends is the most successful game in the world. It has beaten the likes of games such as WoW, Maplestory, and CoD in terms of number of logins every month and profits made by Riot. What caused this game to blow up so quickly? The game was introduced in Korea and within one month it became the most played game in the country. League of Legends is at the forefront of esports with record breaking viewer numbers for tournaments. Why is the game so successful? Is it the inherent make of the game, or the timing that Riot Games hit perfectly?

The sucess of LoL is not luck. From the very beginning Riot followed an algorithm that involved a simple game that also requires a high learning curve, by following games such as Dota LoL was able to make a quality MoBa for the common man. The staff is also excellent and they have been able to create a successful esports community.

i havent played LoL before but it seems to me when i watch someone else play it that it's almost a perfect blend of action, tactics, skill, etc. The only problem i find with it is that it takes so long to finish a game. the abundance of characters also makes it so that people want to try more with other characterists, as it seems.

The abundance of characters also adds to the appeal of choice within a MOBA. A MOBA inherently appears rather banal through the sense that it has only a few modes of play and the same structure to every game/META. LoL came in at a good time since DOTA had begun to get a tad bit old and HON was a literal copy of Dota while Smite was still a Beta at the time and people weren't really into the first person MOBA format.
